Program Positioning

The real estate program at the University of Washington is based in the the Department of Urban Design and Planning (URBDP) in the College of Architecture and Planning (CAUP). This domicile, which is somewhat different from many universities where real estate is based in business schools, is part of the strategic positioning of the program. Rather than concentrating on a particular academic perspective, the UWRE program is interdisciplinary, cutting across academic silos to reflect the broad nature of the real estate decisions. To reflect this diversity, the real estate program has established a number of interdisciplinary linkages across academic units, helping it marshall the resources and support necessary to provide meaningful educational opportunities as well as support research activities to help advance the field. While the program is academic in nature and is helping develop a unified body of thought, it is also an applied program that has strong ties to the real world.

UW Real Estate Program

Students pursuing the Real Estate Specialization take (3) course sequence, (3) real estate elective courses, and (1) additional real estate elective or approved outside elective. Students pursuing the Real Estate Track take (3) core real estate courses, and (1) approved real estate elective. Depending on the designation, students can then "paper clip" or append the designation to their graduate studies in business, geography, law, or other disciplines. This approach has two major benefits. First, it attracts a diverse array of students to the courses providing opportunities for interdisciplinary teamwork in classes. Second, it provides meaningful real estate exposure to students in related fields, providing them the insights and analytical tools to work collaboratively with real estate professionals to solve a range of spatial issues.

Again, it should be noted that students are not "admitted" for real estate, but elect it as part of their major degree program. As such, graduation requirements in terms of internships, theses, exams may vary depending on the base program in which a student is enrolled.
