Overview. This course is designed to introduce students to the overall real estate process including concept generation, market research, design, construction, finance and transactions. The course is structured as a survey course, providing a holistic view of the real estate process with the ultimate goal of helping students understand how to generate optimal real estate solutions for various users that are economically viable, sustainable and environmentally responsible. One of the core activities of the course is the preparation of team-based development proposals for a specific site. This experience is designed to expose students to the myriad issues associated with real estate development and decision-making, including the need to integrate architecture, design, engineering, planning, construction, market research, demographics, entitlements, community needs, neighborhood context and financial feasibility to arrive at viable, sustainable projects. The course is designed to give students an appreciation of the overall process and an understanding of the various decisions and professional skills that should be engaged in real estate decision-making, as well as an insight into the behavioral nature of the field.
Positioning. This is the introductory real estate course that serves as a prerequisite for other core courses and most real estate electives.
