Overview. The real estate development process is one of the critical components of the real estate industry that addresses the actual production of new product, as well as the renovation and rehabilitation of existing product. In many respects, development is a generalist activity that places the developer in the role of the project coordinator or driver who must marshal the appropriate resources –spatial, physical, human and capital—to produce real estate. To an extent, the development process focuses on the front-end of the product life cycle, although successful developers with sustainable business models pay significant attention to the long-term success of the real estate they produce and to its role in the broader market. This course exposes students to the overall development process, as well as to the related activities and disciplines that must be coordinated to achieve certain goals and objectives.
