Academics

Overview
The Runstad Center offers two graduate study programs through the Department of Urban Design and Planning in the College of Built Environments. The first is a rigorous, two year Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE). The MSRE is offered to a class of 20 of the best and brightest students drawn from an international pool of applicants. The other is a Specialization in Real Estate (SRE) available to students pursuing any appropriate Master’s degree within the University of Washington. Students most typically pursue this Specialization from the fields of Planning, Business Administration, Architecture, Construction Management, and Public Affairs, but it is not limited to these degree programs.
Curricula for the MSRE and SRE are integrated to form a diverse community of students with common goals to study real estate, but often with very real differences in career objectives. This diversity of interests leads to exciting discussions within the classroom and strengthens interactions among student teams addressing common topics.
The Runstad Center offers students options for focused learning in real estate reflecting a range of experience and career choices. The MSRE prepares graduates for full time leadership roles within the real estate investment and development professions. The SRE provides insights into and understanding of real estate for those intending to work in related fields but interacting intensely with real estate professionals. Both programs of study focus on gaining knowledge about fundamentals of real estate markets, finance, investment, and development balanced with broad business management and leadership skills required to improve the sustainable performance and quality of urban built environments.
